Het Wonder van Oirsbeek. Samen met filmmaker Kees-Jan Mulder maakte ik deze documentaire, die zowel prequel als sequel is van De Man uit Rome en vooral geheel zijn eigen ding. Hij komt naar je huiskamer. Maandag 30 oktober om 23:17 op NPO 2 (30 min). Of online via 2doc.

De woonkamer van een Limburgs stel staat vol met heiligenbeelden die huilen om al het slechte nieuws dat op hun televisie langskomt. Terwijl vrijwel niemand hen gelooft, bereiden de twee ‘kleine profeten’ zich erop voor dat hun huurhuisje weldra zal veranderen in een internationaal bedevaartoord. Gaandeweg rijst de vraag of het wel zo gek is dat juist bij deze mensen thuis Maria haar tranen niet kan bedwingen.

De Man uit Rome – Trailer

Vanaf 6 april is De Man uit Rome te zien in de filmtheaters.

De sceptische onderzoekspriester Filippo (Michele Riondino) komt in opdracht van het Vaticaan naar een Limburgs grensdorp om een huilend Mariabeeld te onderzoeken. Vastbesloten om het beeld te ontmaskeren, stuit hij op de grimmige dorpsgemeenschap, die diep getraumatiseerd blijkt en zich vastklampt aan hun wonder.

Aangetrokken en ontregeld door de zwijgende Térèse (Emma Bading) die de tranen ontdekte, raakt Filippo verwikkeld in het verdriet van het dorp en in een serie schijnbaar wonderlijke gebeurtenissen die zijn zekerheden over zijn roeping als priester en als mens onderuithalen.

Om te vieren dat we weer onbeschaamd samen naar de bios kunnen, reis ik met de film mee. Er staan nu al nagesprekken gepland in 14 plaatsen. Kijk hier voor theaters, tijden en kaartjes.

Blauw Licht – Herinneringen van een Ambulancebroeder

“Je ziet dingen die heel lastig van je netvlies af te krijgen zijn. Ik haal plaatjes tevoorschijn als een diaprojector. Soms van 10 of 15 jaar geleden. Plaatjes, beelden. En het lijkt net of ze een beetje in je lens gebrand zijn.”

Op allerlei plekken in en om de stad ziet een voormalig ambulancebroeder beelden voor zich van de momenten waarop hij hulp verleende aan een patiënt. Hier lag het ‘binkie’ op een bouwplaats dat om zijn moeder bleef roepen. Daar het jongetje dat frontaal door een stadsbus werd geschept. Daar het meisje met de vlechten dat verdronk in het kanaal. Na 23 jaar op de ambu staat een verzameling verhalen en gezichten op zijn netvlies gebrand.

Mijn lief Carola Houtekamer ontmoette deze bijzondere man en kreeg stukje bij beetje zijn verhalen te horen, met Jefta Varwijk maakte ik er een korte film over voor HUMAN / 2DocKort.

In deze indringende korte documentaire verbeelden filmmakers Jefta Varwijk en Jaap van Heusden (Gouden Kalf genomineerden en winnaars) de herinneringen van deze ambulanceverpleegkundige. Als eerste terplaatse, was hij vaak de laatste die iemands hand vasthield. Terwijl de camera doolt door de flarden blauw flitslicht in zijn geheugen, rijst de vraag: is het wel normaal dat één mens zoveel lijden moet zien?

Filmmaker Van Heusden vertelt waarom hij het belangrijk vond om deze film te maken: ‘Ik verbaas me er de laatste jaren vaak over hoe we het lijden in onze samenleving naar de randen verplaatsen. Liefst uit het zicht. Geen begraafplaats om de kerk, maar weggemoffeld aan de snelweg. We ‘outsourcen’ het onder ogen komen van het lijden aan professionals.’

Co-regisseur Varwijk vult hem aan: ‘Zorgverleners op de ambu zijn dagelijks op pad en zien en ervaren dingen die wij in ons hele leven niet hoeven mee te maken. De verhalen van Louis raken me. Er zijn onderzoeken die aantonen dat werken bij een ambulancedienst net zoveel psychische impact heeft als soldaten die betrokken zijn bij een vuurgevecht. Maar die oorlogsveteranen worden daarna opgevangen en er is een besef dat ze PTSS kunnen oplopen. We noemen ze veteranen.’

Van Heusden: ‘In Nederland is de nazorg voor ‘first responders’ heel gefragmenteerd. Je moet hopen dat het bij jou dienst een beetje goed geregeld is. Vaak is dat niet het geval. En zelf hulp vragen is niet iets wat hulpverleners snel doen. Je hebt toch zelf voor dit werk gekozen. Bloed, stress en dood, daar moet je maar tegen kunnen, is het idee. Ook als het om kinderen of schokkend letsel gaat. Iemand sterft onder je handen, je drinkt een biertje, en je gaat naar huis.’

Varwijk: ‘Door het maken van de film hebben wij nu allebei elke keer dat we een sirene van een ambu horen, even een gedachte: ‘Hé, daar gaan ze weer. Dit zijn mensen als Louis, die heftige dingen gaan meemaken.’ We hopen dat de kijkers dat ook gaan voelen. En dat ze zich daarna, net als wij, anders tot die hulpverleners gaan verhouden.’

On loss & solace

It’s quiet here. This virtual place, like so much of the world, is holding its breath. Behind the scenes, there is the hustle and bustle of writing and planning and casting and lots of financing going on for both of my two upcoming features and for a few short documentary films, while we wait for the world to open up again.

One of the things that bring comfort meanwhile, is film. I’m hosting an online edition of my filmclub and yesterday we watched Ponette (1996). A film by Jacques Doillon. The storyline is simple and powerful. 4-year-old Ponette loses her mother in a car crash. But Ponette refuses to let go of her. She wants her mommy.

The 4 year-old lead actress was awarded the Best Actress Award in Venice and that shows the bewilderment of the audience, including myself, on how such a young child was able to bring such a moving performance to the screen. Call it great acting. Or directing. Or a little filmmaking miracle.

Rogier de Blok and I just submitted a new draft of our newest screenplay to our translator and that probably felt like a big enough accomplishment for me to feel brave enough to pick up a book about the fear and self-punishment of the act of writing and about its hopes too.

From Anne Lamott’s ‘bird by bird’:

“I just try to warn people who hope to get published that publication is not all that it is cracked up to be. But writing is. Writing has so much to give, so much to teach, so many surprises. That thing you had to force yourself to do—the actual act of writing—turns out to be the best part. It’s like discovering that while you thought you needed the tea ceremony for the caffeine, what you really needed was the tea ceremony. The act of writing turns out to be its own reward.

            I’ve managed to get some work done nearly every day of my adult life, without impressive financial success. Yet I would do it all over again in a hot second, mistakes and doldrums and breakdowns and all. Sometimes I could not tell you exactly why, especially when it feels pointless and pitiful, like Sisyphus with cash-flow problems. Other days, though, my writing is like a person to me—the person who, after all these years, still makes sense to me. It reminds me of “The Wild Rose,” a poem Wendell Berry wrote for his wife:

Sometimes hidden from me

in daily custom and in trust, 

so that I live by you unaware

as by the beating of my heart,

Suddenly you flare in my sight,

a wild rose blooming at the edge

of thicket, grace and light

where yesterday was only shade,

and once again I am blessed, choosing

again what I chose before.

Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve thought that there was something noble and mysterious about writing, about the people who could do it well, who could create a world as if they were little gods or sorcerers. All my life I’ve felt that there was something magical about people who could get into other people’s minds and skin, who could take people like me out of ourselves and then take us back to ourselves. And you know what? I still do.”

Wow, when I heard her perform this, I was completely convinced it was a poem made for this crisis. Then later, I seemed to recognize the words. From her album released June last year. But of course that doesn't matter. Kate Tempest is a force of nature. Her poem was indeed made for this hour.

The Man from Rome

What is the right time to announce a new creation? By now, my fellow writer Rogier de Blok and I have spent quite a few years with the story for a new film: The Man from Rome. So by now, we’re so full of the story, we want to share it. As if you’ve met a new friend you want to introduce to everybody. But until there is a strong possibility that the story and then the screenplay will indeed be transformed into a film, it always seems too early to talk about it. (It can be quite hard to introduce people to your imaginary friends, can’t it?).

But now we have a solid draft and the Dutch Film Fund is partnering with IJswater Films and us to develop it further; rewriting, doing artistic research, also with the Director of Photography Melle van Essen and Production Designer Jorien Sont, in Limburg, Belgium, Rome. So now seems a suitable time to share these images from the mood board. And the elevator pitch of the story:

The sceptical priest Filippo (37) is sent by the Vatican to investigate and debunk a crying statue of the Virgin Mary in a border community in Limburg, where four years ago a boy shot and killed eleven of his schoolmates. Attracted and unsettled by the mute young woman Térèse (19) who discovered the tears, he gets entangled in the village’s grief and a series of apparently miraculous events that bring down his certainties about his calling as a priest and as a human being.

Yesterday, true to tradition, the best actor and best actress unveiled their golden tiles, one year after winning the Dutch Academy Award (golden calf). Very proud of Maria Kraakman.

Hoedt u voor de kunst. Een stukje in de krant. Een man een vrouw, hun dochter. Ze hebben altijd een varkensfokbedrijf gehad. Op land dat grenst aan dat van hun ouders. Dag in dag uit van zonsopgang tot zonsondergang het boerenbestaan. Maar voor hun kinderen wilden ze altijd andere opties openhouden. Er hing een wereldkaart boven de tafel om ze te laten zien hoe klein ons land is en hoe groot de wereld. Een van hun dochters ging naar de kunstacademie. Vader reed op en neer met zijn aanhanger om haar levensgrote kunstinstallaties te vervoeren. De varkens maakten plaats voor een boomgaard. En die maakte plaats voor een groentetuin. Er kwam een biggetje als huisdier. Ze gingen vegetarisch eten. Hoedt u voor de kunst.

Kunst is verheven, is duur, is elitair, is progressief. Nee. Dat is deels vooroordeel en deels marketing, maar toch niet het hart van de zaak: kunst maakt alle dingen nieuw. Kunst laat je kijken alsof je voor het eerst kijkt. Zien alsof je voor het eerst ziet. Dat klinkt optimistisch en dat kan het zijn, zolang je iets goeds met nieuwe ogen ziet. Evenzeer is het aanstootgevend en shockerend en levensgevaarlijk, omdat het alle kwade zaken die we niet meer zien, toont met nieuw venijn. Hoedt u voor de kunst. Dat graven, om aan te boren, bloot te leggen, is net als mediteren of bidden, arbeid die ingaat tegen de maalstroom van de dingen. Het vraagt alles van de maker en ook de kijker moet all-in. De boel moet op zijn kop, binnenstebuiten. Dat is vaak opwindend en aanstekelijk. Vaak ook pijnlijk of zelfs saai. En wie zich opent, loopt gevaar. Maar is er een andere uitweg? De liefde vernieuwt zich of sterft. Hoedt u voor de kunst.

Asylum on a roll

Asylum has been traveling quite a bit over the last few months. Being shown (and even picking up the odd price) at welcoming festivals in Berlin, Kolkata, Rome, Chennai, Los Angeles and New York. The newest news is from Glasgow. From the wonderful Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival. Where Jefta will be accepting an award in person. (updated with picture as proof!)

Yes we Cannes

Last year I flew out to Cambridge Bay in the very North of Canada's Nunavut for research. I endured -35 degrees (this is when your moustache freezes up in 20 seconds and your iPhone turns off after a minute) and enjoyed the warm welcome of Sarah Olayok Jancke and Ipeelie Ootova into their Arctic lives. I was there for another round of preparations for a new script called In Alaska.

And today some wonderful news came in from the festival of festivals, where it's always warm: Cannes. That our script has been selected to be part of the festival's l'Atelier. It's such a crazy showcase. With crazy statistics. Out of the 198 projects they selected, 184 were made or are in pre-production. So a big step for In Alaska and me and my longtime partners in crime Marc Bary & Steven Rubinstein. If all goes well, we'll be suffering much more cold and hardships before long!

Scène

Gisteravond was ik te gast bij VPRO Nooit Meer Slapen. Praten over een van mijn favoriete filmscènes. Eentje uit Wenders' Der Himmel über Berlin. Het is allemaal wat uit de losse pols, maar wat een verademing om over andermans werk te kletsen. Mijn hogere doel met dat gesprek was die scène en film (nogmaals) met u te delen. Dus daarom niet enkel een link naar de radiouitzending, maar ook eentje naar de scène zelf.

Twee rechercheurs hebben nog acht uur om een terrorismeverdachte, de Somalisch-Nederlandse Mahdi, tot een bekentenis te brengen. Hij wordt ervan verdacht een aanslag voor te bereiden, maar hard bewijs ontbreekt. Mogen ze hem vasthouden om erger te voorkomen of heeft hij net als ieder ander recht op zijn eigen geloofsovertuiging?
